The KonMari Method: How to Inspire Joy in Your Office

Marie Kondo is a cleaning and organizing consultant who has been in the business since 1997. She rose to fame in 2014 when “The Magic of Tidying Up” became a bestseller in the United States. She has appeared on numerous talk shows since then and even hosted the Netflix series, “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo,” which was released in 2019.

The KonMari Method (TM)

Most people use a room-by-room method to tidy up their space. In a sense, it makes sense because you want to keep everything where it “belongs.”

Some people choose to take a little-by-little method. Some people believe that by removing a small amount of clutter each time, they can eventually achieve a more organized and cleaner space. This is a problem because, in between tidying sessions, you may accumulate new clutter.

The KonMari(tm) suggests that you organize your belongings by category, using the five categories below.

Marie Kondo, in addition to the categories mentioned above for your belongings, has also developed six basic rules of tidying. These are:

Commit to cleaning up.

Imagine the lifestyle you would like to live.

Finish discarding first.

Sort by category and not by location.

Follow the correct order.

You can ask yourself if you feel joy.

The KonMari Method asks you only to keep the things that bring you joy and throw away everything else. This can be done by either throwing them out (properly, of course) or selling or donating. Marie Kondo says it’s also important to thank each item for its service before you let it go.

KonMari Your Workspace

It’s great that the KonMari Method doesn’t just apply to the home. It’s possible to use the KonMari Method anywhere, even in your office. If you work in an office, the commercial cleaners are likely to thank you for helping them.

Here’s how to apply the KonMari Method, whether you work from home or an office.

Your Desk

Your desk will be where you spend a large part of your time working. Therefore, it must be well-organized and clutter-free. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to remove all the accessories. You can keep something that brings you joy, such as a frame with a family photo.

You also don’t want to go overboard when it comes to decorating. Consider hanging photos instead of placing more on your desk. Find the balance between personalization and organization.

Your Inbox

Clutter isn’t just on your desk. Clutter can also invade digital spaces! You should certainly apply the KonMari Method to your email.

This can be a daunting task, especially if your email collection is extensive. Many tools and features can make this process easier. You can, for example, search through your emails by sending date or year. You can then easily delete the ones you don’t need.

Your files, physical and digital.

Papers are a category of your belongings that the KonMari method uses. You’ll find it in abundance at your home office or workplace. Your work generates lots of paper clutter, from meeting notes to training modules.

It is important to determine what you require now, what you will need in the future, and what documents you want to keep. Documents owned by the company, such as handbooks, are a great example of what you should keep. It may be necessary to retain such documents and return them at the end of your employment. You can’t throw them away (even if that is what you want).

Keep only the files that you want to keep. Toss everything else. Send the recyclable files to the appropriate facility. If not, you should responsibly dispersibly delete digital files or archive them.

Your Storage Solutions

After you have sorted through the clutter and decided what you want to keep, you can begin to organize it. This job will be easier if you use storage solutions that are also enjoyable. You’ll feel more motivated to keep up with all the organizing and cleaning you’ve done.

Although personal style preferences can vary, it is important to keep in mind that a storage system should make it easy to remove and replace items. It’s difficult to keep things tidy when it is difficult to return items to their original containers.

People all over the globe are captivated by the KonMari Method because it is not only practical. It also emphasizes being mindful and assessing feelings. This results in a more holistic, fulfilling life.
